Hayland Township Land Use Ordinance
Hayland Township determined it was in its best interest of the Town to adopt regulations on the use of the land within the township, since 1998. The purpose of this ordinance is to protect public health, safety, and general welfare; preserve property values; conserve natural resources and open space; prevent overcrowding by residential dwellings, and to preserve the rural nature of the Township by limiting residential density.
The density of dwelling units within a quarter/quarter section of land shall be limited to no more than two dwelling units, unless a temporary secondary dwelling unit is approved as provided in this ordinance.
Variances
Variance requests may be submitted to the Town Board. The Board of Appeals and Adjustments then shall hold a public hearing on the request after providing at least 10 days published notice.
Reasons a Variance may be requested:
If the property owner is able to demonstrate the strict enforcement of this ordinance would cause practical difficulties. If the plight of the landowner is due to circumstances unique to the property not created by the landowner. And if your variance is in harmony with the general purposes and intent of the Ordinance, is consistent with the comprehensive plan, and if granted, shall not alter the essential character of the Township. Economic considerations alone shall not consistute practical difficulties. The Board of Appeals and Adjustments may impose conditions on the variances it issues.
Township News
Summer 2025
Pedestrian Signs have recently been installed and are a suggested speed when pedestrians are present. Due to the increased traffic of vehicles, ATV, and UTVs we are attempting to see if this will slow traffic down on the gravel roads. We are monitoring other roads and plan on offering this to our residents if we see an improvement in traffic speed. We welcome feedback regarding the traffic in your area.
This is an application for a variance from the strict application of the restrictions in Hayland Township.
